My students need 10 Hokki stools to help them get their wiggles out.
This project expired on February 15, 2016.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
We are a loud and mobile classroom of diverse students, who approach learning in an alternative way. Many of my fourth graders entered the year significantly below level in math and reading. Through music, movement, and lots of reading, they are diligently working to be the best they can be.
Our elementary school serves a community of low to middle income students who come to school each day eager to learn.
All of our students receive free lunches. I have the privilege of teaching an inclusion classroom with both regular education and ESE students. My students' needs include learning disorders, Autism, neurological and gastrointestinal disorders, and ADD/ADHD. Because of my students' wide range of needs and diverse learning backgrounds, we are a mobile and active class.
Over half of my class is diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. These students have difficulty sitting still and feel stifled in traditional chairs. Because of this, many of my students choose to grab clipboards and sit on the floor or to stand near their desk and work. To concentrate, they sway, rock, and fidget, which helps them concentrate, but is distracting to other students in my class. With testing approaching I want all my students to be able to concentrate. After doing some research, I have discovered Hokki Stools. These stools will allow my ADD/ADHD students the outlet of the movement they need in order to concentrate, but that will keep them in their seats so other students are less distracted. Giving my students the opportunity to move and wiggle on the Hokki stools while they work, will improve their posture, balance, and allow them to focus on learning, rather than trying to sit still.
Every day, I watch my ADD/ADHD students struggle with the wiggles.
They do not like being a distraction to themselves and others. The Hokki stools will allow these students the ability to move, so they can focus on their working, rather than their wiggles.
