I teach at a therapeutic special education school serving approximately 82 students who have been unable to succeed in a community school setting due to intense emotional, behavioral, and academic needs. 100% of my students receive free lunch, making our school one of the highest poverty schools in the district.
Despite so many hardships, my students are incredible children with boundless potential.
Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming community to help my students grow into productive citizens.
My Project
What I am requesting for our students is so much more than just a PlayStation and game to go along with it! The materials I'm requesting are going to help teach our special education students to become team players, and create bonding experiences with one another, as well as an incentive to use in their downtime, once they get their work done! All of our students are receiving services in our special education self-contained setting. We have limited resources that provide our students with opportunities to have fun during their downtime. Our students get downtime when they are done with their academic work. We are also creating a "fun day" every 3 weeks for our students who are caught up on academics to receive rewards and fun experiences.
The PlayStation I am requesting will be used exactly for these incentives; a lot of our students aren't motivated to get their academic work done or even follow school expectations.
The school setting I work in has to go above and beyond to find incentives that will motivate our students to follow school expectations, as well as get their work done. The universal interest of our students is basketball. We are starting to develop a great basketball community of students (some of them only come to school on basketball days just for that reason). I want to provide students with opportunities to look forward to coming to school that motivate them. A PlayStation and basketball game is exactly what they are asking for and will help us get through this freezing cold Minnesota winter, when we're stuck inside!
