Each year I am amazed by the sixth grade students that walk into my math and science classroom. Our math and science class builds on their natural curiosity and inquisitive nature. We work tremendously hard to master our learning standards but we take time to develop our individual strengths and broaden our understanding of others. My classroom is truly filled with future change-makers!
My sixth-grade students are innovators, risk-takers, and active problem solvers who excel when given project-based learning opportunities that tap into their creativity and generosity.
I am constantly impressed at how the families, students, and school staff work as a team whenever someone is in need. Our students constantly amaze me, and I look forward to each smile, each act of happiness, and their desire to learn more! I learn from the students each and every day and am thankful I was selected to be their teacher.
My Project
In sixth grade we dig deep into the concept of atoms, elements, and molecules. These are incredibly difficult concepts to imagine and understand! I currently use interactive media, text, demonstrations, and students create their own models with drawing materials. But this summer I learned about an amazing interactive building tool! 3D Molecular Designs that are magnetic.
Sixth graders can develop a deeper understanding of a science concept when given the chance to explore, build, question, and redesign 3D models.
My students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the key concepts by building them with the 3D molecular water kit. I can quickly gain an insight students' concrete skills and where we need some clarification. Students can use the models to demonstrate water as a liquid, gas, and solid. They can also dig deep into this standard and learn how to build different water solids. Students can turn their 3D models over and see what it looks like from all sides. Something that wasn't available in our class before! This set of water kits will truly transform not only how they develop their knowledge but how quickly they can demonstrate proficiency.
