8 am every week day morning I stand at my door and greet my 6th grade students as they come into first hour for math. Some are happy to be there; some are not. Some are happy to be away from the chaos of an unstable home life for a few hours; others would rather be home sleeping, playing video games, or reading. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. In the end they are your typical middle school students who are full of energy, emotion, opinions and enthusiasm (or lack of enthusiasm) that you would expect from middle school students
Yes, sometimes they drive me a little crazy.
They are middle school kids and I have learned to love each one of them for their uniqueness and what they bring to the table on any given day.
At the end of the day I am charged with getting math content into their growing minds. Some students are easy to reach, some need a little more work.
My Project
Math can be a struggle for some students. Some students have a hard time grasping abstract concepts without first experiencing them in a concrete/visual way. By having the Math Manipulative Set it will give my students a variety of tools they can use to help the visualize the concepts they are working on. Once they experience it with concrete, physical examples they can move on to understanding it more abstractly and deeper. I also need a class set of calculators so students can focus on the math concept and not getting mixed up in the numbers.
Experiencing math "hands on" helps kids to be more successful with abstract concepts.
Graphing is one concept that a lot of students struggle with (at all ages). By having a class set of dry erase graph boards it will allow me to do some quick formative assessments on the skill. It will also allow the students another way to practice their graphing skills.
