My students need resources, like several games, reading rods, and touch and trace cards, that will help them learn, instead of the old paper and pencil (or in their case, crayon) method.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Confucius once said, "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand". Transitioning from half-day pre-school to full-day kindergarten has not been easy for my students; it has been scary and exhausting. Please help them ease into kindergarten with these hands-on resources!
My classroom is comprised of twenty-six ELL students that are putting their best foot forward despite the obstacles threatening their success.
About 98% of our (700+) student body is considered low-income. Forty-eight percent of those students are also English Language Learners. Besides living in a poverty-stricken area, my students must also deal with violence and, in some cases, death as a result of co-habitation with gangs.
My Project
If my class receives the items requested, their classroom will be not only their safe-haven, but also a place they still feel like children. I am requesting hands-on materials such as reading rods in Spanish, textured touch and trace cards, as well as a few games that will help them with memory retention, word formation, and comprehension skills (i.e., sequencing and classifying cards). Having these hands-on resources will give them a break from writing all the time and, in some cases, they will be reinforcing skills they have learned or learning new ones without being aware of it. Students will also be able to have more choices when it comes to centers, therefore, their work will be enjoyable as opposed to something they feel forced into.
Physics Professor Victor Weisskopf said, "People cannot learn by having information pressed into their brains.
Knowledge has to be sucked into the brain, not pushed in. First, one must create a state of mind that craves knowledge, interest and wonder. You can teach only by creating an urge to know." Your donations would clearly peak the interest of my tenacious students, and I can assure that in their eyes there is no better way to learn than through play!
