Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With our school population of almost 800, 100% of the students are living in apartments. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 85% of our students receiving free lunch. Students have the option to receive free breakfast daily through a program at the school that is open to all students.
Our school has a diverse population of students from various countries who speak a variety of different languages.
Many students will come to our school for the first time and never have learned to speak English.
I have assisted our school in providing a variety of resources such as weekend food bags for students, free eye care and exams, dental screenings, a free food pantry, and a clothing closet.
My Project
My classroom has a nice variety of manipulative, puzzles and learning materials but the shelving unit they are organized in is falling apart. We have been using the same shelving for about 10 years now and an update is needed. Not only would this shelf provide more storage than the current shelf, but it would be safer, too, since the older shelf has peeling paint and is wobbly. A large, sturdy shelf will allow the children to access the materials they need and give me piece of mind knowing that it is clean and safe. A shelving unit might not be the most “exciting” item, but it is very much needed.
An organized classroom is a productive classroom!
