This is my first year teaching seventh grade science. I love working with students and seeing their "lights" come on as they grasp new concepts. However, it is very frustrating when my students seem to grasp the material covered yet continually score low on their assessments (tests, quizzes, etc.).
Our school is situated in a very small town. I teach two classes of students with 100% "at risk" students. My other two classes also contain some "at risk" students. There seems to be little to inspire my "at risk" students to strive for success.
I've tried various ways to reach them, and I've put a lot of thought into what would make my students more successful. One thing that I've come to realize is that the students I teach who are better organized score better. I think these students have the materials they need to keep their notes and handouts in order. Many of my students who do not succeed as expected do not have these resources.
These materials were on the list of seventh grade materials at the beginning of the school year. I also sent a letter to parents at the beginning of this calendar year asking them to make sure their students had essentials such as a three-ring binder, colored pencils, and paper. I've not seen much response.
I would like help providing materials for students in my classes. I already provide paper and pencils on a daily basis for students without those materials. I would like for them to have 3 inch 3-ring binders, dividers, colored pencils, and 3-subject notebooks. I feel with the right tools, my students will become better students who can be more successful. They will see themselves as more successful students when they have what they need to succeed.
