My students need spiral notebooks, folders, and pencils to be successful in the classroom. Notebooks are needed to encourage note taking, folders to encourage organization of materials, and pencils are to complete class and homework.
I teach in a low income school district, where most of our students come from single parent homes. The students in my building face the daily struggle of attending school daily without having the supplies and basic understanding of how to be successful within the classroom. Our students want to learn and be successful but often need help in the areas of academics and social skills.
The students are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom.
They often have to watch their siblings after school because of their parent(s) working late and are responsible for taking care of their homes. Our students are also having to face a neighborhood that is known to have crime issues regularly. The students want to do better but need guidance and support in all areas of their life to be able to learn skills necessary to getting out of the cycle of poverty.
My Project
Every year, I have multiple students come to my class without the materials that are necessary to be successful in the classroom. Most of my students come from single-parent homes which means that they don't have access to funds to be able to get basic school supplies that are needed to be able to take notes and stay organized in their classes.
I make it a priority every year to give all of my students at least one notebook and two folders.
I do this so that my students are able to begin to learn how to take notes, complete all assignments, and stay organized in all classes. My students want to do better, but they often need help getting the necessities to be able to learn how to be successful.
