Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ask most adults about their science instruction in elementary school and the "Science Fair" is likely to be a topic. For many, these fairs were the first opportunity to explore in detail the scientific principles that fascinate children: why magnets work, how does garbage decompose, and exactly what happens when you stick a fork in the light socket. Sadly, students at my school may never get that chance unless you help.
I teach 4th grade science at Ralph J. Bunche Elementary, which is a Title I school in Compton, CA. Over 90 percent of our students are eligible for free lunch. The majority of our students are English Language Learners. This is the first year our school dedicated a class period to science instruction. As a result, there is more time for labs, explorations, and experiments. Not surprisingly, our students are incredibly excited and engaged in science.
We want to capitalize on that enthusiasm by holding our school's first ever upper grade school-wide Science Fair. Given our district's spotty record in holding fairs between schools I feel like this is our best opportunity to hold a true Science Fair where students work for several weeks at home, gather their results, present their findings and compete for prizes.
A staple of Science Fairs is the multi-paneled display board where students demonstrate their mastery of questioning, testing, observing, and analyzing. The display board is a source of pride and record of achievement. However, given the financial situation of our students' families it is unrealistic for us to ask them to purchase these boards.
With your help, we can provide one display board for each upper grade student. Winning projects can be used in future years to inspire more scientific discovery so we hope this fair has lasting effects. Thank you for your consideration.
