Getting Lost in New Books!

Help me give my students a variety of new books for our classroom library that will spark their interest and encourage their love of reading.

My Students

I teach reading and social studies to 75 fifth graders throughout the school year. The students at our school are amazing kiddos that come from low socio-economic homes. Our school is a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. The family structure of our students can be any combination you can think of. They need the necessary tools to keep them engaged and on task.

Getting lost in a good book is probably the best therapy for anybody, especially a child.

Our classroom is made up of a diverse group of learners that come from a variety of backgrounds. Our students come on all different learning levels but with the same hunger to learn! I work hard to provide my students with literature and learning experiences that will bridge the gap and make them into lifelong learners. Through the use of rich literature on all different reading levels, each and every student can find a book that they are passionate about and therefore love.

My Project

With budget cuts, teachers have to furnish much of their own classroom libraries. Books can be expensive, and when you multiply the cost of books times buying books at several different reading levels for students with a wide range of interests, you can see that it is nearly impossible for one person to stock a classroom library that is going to meet the needs of all students.

In order for students to be excited about reading, they must have books that catch their interest!

They need a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. With the lack of books, students often run out of new books to read during their independent reading time, which causes them to lose interest in reading and that would be a terrible thing to happen.

Inspiring our youth to read multiple books in a month can be challenging, but with these high-interest books, my students would love to read more!
