My students need copies of Island of the Blue Dolphins to read together and increase their reading engagement!

My students come in every day with a thirst for knowledge despite the two-hour bus ride many of them have to take and the poverty-stricken homes they leave early in the morning. Many of my students speak different languages at home but are still expected to learn the same content as the native English speakers. Over 90% of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch indicating that their family lives near or below the poverty line. Often not able to afford school supplies or study with their children, their parents work long hours to send their students to our school in uniform and ready for learning.
Reading is a struggle with over 70% of students reading below grade level.
My goal is to increase their love of reading by introducing engaging books they will remember for a lifetime! I want to increase their reading level and send them to middle school prepared next year!
Every year, I conduct a small book club of 4 students to read Island of the Blue Dolphins. This book has been a hit every year with students. I would love to conduct a full class book club to increase engagement and reading skills, but I don't have enough books.
Island of the Blue Dolphins helps students visualize what they are reading and analyze how events influence character behavior.
It is a challenging text with great vocabulary to push students to the next level. Every student will be enthralled by the text as they read about the life, choices, and drama of this heroine.
