Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dawes School is a Chicago Public School located in the Ashburn Community. 88% of the children are considered low-income and receive free/reduced lunch. The student body is 53% Hispanic, 40% African American, 6% Caucasians and 1% Asian.
I want to create opportunities for social development and bridge the racial differences in my classroom. In order to have a curriculum based on this ideology we need to create a curriculum that honors, respects and acknowledges diversity. The first thing that I think needs to be done is to have a multicultural curriculum that works towards understanding different cultures. In order to have a social justice curriculum, students need to be tolerant and understanding of each other's beliefs in order to function in the realms of the classroom and society, and one way to do this is have students read different novels. I think books can become powerful when readers are completely hooked.
One of the first things I would do in my classroom is pick novels that relate to what the concepts are being studied in class. For example, if my class was investing immigrations I would offer books that address the experience of children whose families emigrated from another country to the United States. It is important to have an anti-racist curriculum and one way to do this is to make room for other cultures perspectives. For example, my students would read stories like Esperanaza Rising, which is a story that that deals with issues of being Latin American during WWI and WWII. My philosophy about education is to give students enough background information so some of the negative stereotypes can be eliminated.
