Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyone remembers being in school when their teachers made them read a book they didn't want to read.
My inner-city students live in homes where there aren't a whole lot of books or reading going on.
When they come to my classroom, it is the only reading time that some of them get. Some love to read and just need the reading material. Others have never learned to love reading and need to find that one book that will show them the magic of reading.
My Project
I have asked for 3 professional books about helping students learning to love reading as well as a bunch of high-interest books targeted at reluctant readers. These are gateway books, the kind of books that are known to get kids reading for the first time.
Every single subject requires students to read, but a lot of students aren't doing the reading that it takes to be successful in all of their classes.
Recent studies shows that students who read for pleasure are much more likely to score well on achievement tests. Reading is the key to success in all subjects.
