Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are consistently eager to learn and are enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom. Our students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home.
Most of our students do not have regular access to technology at home, yet they are motivated and engaged by opportunities to use technology and innovative resources to enhance their learning in school.
STEAM is one of the most relevant and applicable areas of learning for students today, since so many of the jobs that will be available in their futures require these skills and knowledge. Our students are the next generation of innovators and engineers! We need to provide them with opportunities to develop the innovative thinking and problem-solving skills that they will need to be successful.
My Project
As the math instructional coach at my school, I work with teachers and students in grades 1-4. This year I am working to increase students' access to STEAM experiences--engaging, hands-on opportunities to engage in innovative creative thinking and collaborative problem solving. Our students need more opportunities to develop the 21st century skills, such as coding, that they will need in order to be successful in their future careers.
Our fourth-graders have been working to develop coding skills with our various robots and coding platforms; now it is time to introduce our younger students to coding.
Fourth graders will take on the roles of Coding buddies, and work with first- and second-graders to explore new technology and to learn the basic concepts of coding and computer programming. Coding and robotics activities motivate and engage students. They learn to collaborate and communicate, to persevere towards a challenging goal, to take risks and continually revise their thinking, all while experimenting with new technology--and they are eager to do it! I am so excited to see how the older students can model this innovative spirit for their younger peers!
The addition of another Ozobot, the Dash & Dot Coding Challenge Cards, and the Robot Mouse activity sets will allow us to create learning experiences for our first- and second-graders, and to expand our coding and robotics learning schoolwide. We will also host family coding events, so that students can demonstrate their learning for their families, and teach them how to code as well! Hands-on, engaging activities such as this are a meaningful way for parents in our community to interact with their children in the school environment.
As robotics and computers become increasingly prevalent in students’ lives, understanding programming concepts is becoming more important for students’ success--today and in their futures.
