Help me give my students laboratory equipment and supplies so that they can engage in hands-on scientific practices while applying core ideas in Earth Science.
My amazing sixth-grade students are smart, creative, spontaneous, and full of a love of learning! They come to school each day with lots of questions about the world around them. Whether working on math problems or conducting science experiments, my students love to learn by doing.
Our school serves many military families from the nearby Air Force base, a Navy EOD school, and an Army Special Forces cantonment.
We are in a unique area to have military families from so many different branches of service. Because of the challenges of military life, my students are resilient and hard-working.
My Project
The best way to learn is to learn by doing! I want my students to be able to learn by doing hands-on investigations that relate to our Earth Science topics. Science is about interacting with the world and learning through experiences and observations. These lab investigation kits will bring our science lessons off of the textbook page and into real life.
In this project, my students will complete a series of hands-on lab experiences to enhance our Earth Science class.
They will investigate rates of erosion and weathering on several rock types with varying levels of acidity, how mechanical weathering changes rock materials, and a method of carbon sequestration. They will model the interaction of atmospheric carbon dioxide and ocean water, discover mechanisms that cause changes in Earth's features, and collect data to determine how aquatic photosynthetic organisms impact dissolved oxygen concentrations.
Students will learn, explore, and discover through the use of these hands-on activities, error analysis, and their own experiences. With your help, they can get in touch with Earth Science concepts.
