Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our district has adopted the Common Core Curriculum this year. It leaves very little time for writer's workshop and creative writing. The focus is more on non-fiction formal writing. I am not against that, but I really would like to incorporate fictional writing into my curriculum too.
I teach fifth grade students in an urban setting in Upstate New York.
Most of my students get a free or reduced lunch. They haven't been very far from their own neighborhood. Some of my students aren't allowed to go out in their own neighborhood because it is too dangerous. They have very little background knowledge to help them to be creative with their writing.
My Project
This project would help me to teach my students how to write graphic novels or cartoons. I know that my students have trouble making connections to much of the Common Core. These resources would help my students build a framework to help them with a starting place and motivation. My kids have great imaginations. I would like a place where they can share that imagination and have a final project that they can be proud of. We have an arts festival in the spring at our school. I would like my kids to be able to display their work for our entire school.
There is so much negativity this year with the poor test scores in our school.
I want a bright spot in the curriculum where they can shine and excel. You could make a child learn to love writing for life.
