We are the second largest school in our district that directly impacts our military community along with low income and ESE communities. We house grades PK- 8 in our buildings, including the second highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military. This makes us a population that serves military families and military students. Our school directly impacts the military community it is built around. These demographics make our school a very diverse population.
Our school is also a Title I school, which means the majority of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunches.
Some are displaced while others are homeless. To give these students the opportunities they all deserve, we must provide a quality learning environment. Being Title I, those essentials are few and far between. Our students are bright, they are resilient, and they strive to be the best they know how to be, but they also want to be more than that. It is our responsibility to make those things happen to them no matter what it takes.
My Project
The math manipulatives I am asking for will help students be more actively engaged in our daily math lessons. The large magnetic ten frames will allow for a more interactive modeling experience. We have a very large class and some kids located towards the back of the room struggle to see what is projected on the overhead. Using these large manipulatives will hopefully eliminate that struggle. The 1,000 ct double sided counters will be for the students to use at their seats to solve and model the particular problem we are all working on together as a class. In addition to those two resources, I am also asking for various manipulatives that will be used in our small group stations.
I firmly believe that students learn better when they are able to have more hands on experience.
The white board paddles, ten frame trays, and stamps will be their kinesthetic aids.
