Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

As a first grade teacher I know the importance of teaching phonics, along with other reading strategies. I work with a group of 29 first graders on the south side of Chicago. This group of students is very eager to learn, but lack some of the basic skills needed to read. If you would be willing to help fund the materials that I am asking for my students will be able to take an active part in their own learning. My goal is to have the students use the Leap Pad Learning Systems to listen to the letter sounds so that they can hear the proper way to pronounce each letter, blend, diphthong, digraph or controlled vowel sound. We will also utilize the listening lotto materials to practice hearing the sounds. We would use the writing paper and chart paper to create our own words and word lists to increase our listening and writing ability. As my students become more comfortable with the sounds that letters make and as they learn how to write various words, then they can write their own stories using the skills that the Leap Pad Learning System and listening lotto has reinforced.
