My students need a wide range of books that will help them identify differing genres while giving them examples of the diversity that exists in our classroom and in the world.
My second grade students are wonderfully curious and creative! They are culturally and economically diverse and they express diversity in their learning styles too. When I introduce a new topic to my class, some of my students get wildly excited, while others feel concerned that the new task will be too difficult for them or they fear they won't understand it.
Introducing new concepts to second graders generally follows a pattern.
First, give them something concrete to build a foundation for understanding. After that, slowly pull away to see the concept more abstractly. In this way, the children have a more in-depth understanding and can hold onto the concepts they've learned.
My Project
The books I'm requesting for my students offer a wide range of genre while demonstrating cultural diversity. These books, in the hands of my second graders, will accomplish both as they will see examples of diverse cultures while learning a variety of genres.
We have diverse faces in our classroom and we need them in our books!
Everyone, including children, wants and needs to feel connections. These materials will help my students feel connected to books, people and the world. I hope you'll be able to help us see ourselves in the history, science, poetry and literature of the world.
