Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ready, Set, Go... Math, Science, and PE...Let's play hide and seek using GPS units and get physically fit in the process.
My students range in grade level from 3rd to 5th.
Our school is a math and science magnet school located in Nevada. The school was recently named one of the top five in the nation and is in the running for first place. It is only through the generous donations that we have been able to achieve this honor.
My Project
Our fifth graders attend a three day camp experience learning about environmental science in a hands-on setting. Part of the experience involves mapping, but we have very little technology to use to enhance that experience. The five GPS units will provide a great opportunity for my fifth graders to learn about longitude and latitude and how it is used in science and math. Additionally, the units will be used at the school in the science an math labs when coordinates are learned and discussed in grades 3-5. Students will use the GPS to geocache. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game that uses coordinates. Items are hidden around the world and the object of the game is to locate those items and sign a log. In the process it encourages students to become physically fit as they often times need to hike into an area to find the geocache.
Stories are often broadcasted on the news about how nonphysically fit our children are becoming.
Students love technology and games so what better way to get them up and moving than to provide them with an opportunity to use technology while playing a game. Additionally, it is promoting math and science in the process. It is a win-win situation.
