My Students

My students are your average students who love to fit in and be like everyone else. They are excited to learn about everything, especially the world that awaits them as they prepare for high school and their 1st job. Understanding how personal finance works will help them prepare for their future!

Everyday, students face challenges they must overcome to be successful.

My ELL students face triple the # of obstacles as their peers: 1, they are developing their English; 2, they are learning literacy in a new language; & 3, they are learning content knowledge as well. Add financial literacy to that mix and it seems like an unsurpassable mountain. However, my students are motivated! At my school, for the 4th quarter, all 8th graders participate in an Economics unit. We visit local business partners for a day to see "behind the scenes," then that new knowledge is brought back to the classroom where we develop concrete knowledge of how the financial world works, both private and public. My students are typical teenagers who want their financial freedom and want that first job, but sadly, many of them come from homes where savings, credit, and security are simply words. I want to change that and help them understand how money, taxes, saving, and credit are part of their life, even now.

My Project

ELL students are normally shy and hesitate to get involved in activities in the classroom because of the language barrier. However, they are quick to lower that hesitancy when applications and games come into play. They become the curious, social beings they truly are and fear of embarrassment starts to melt away. By engaging in financial games/sites (such as The Mint and 360 Financial Literacy), and using our Economics curriculum, my students will be better prepared to understand the financial freedom and responsibility of money and credit. Using the Macbook and Apple TV in the classroom and having ipads for student activities, my students will be able to actively participate with their peers in learning about, applying, and understanding financial literacy. Since our county has recently adopted a "BYOD" (Bring your own device) policy for students, many of my students do not own tablets or ipads to bring to class. Having ipads for student use would level the playing field greatly.

Who doesn't want to earn money?

To understand how "things" work in the real world? By having mobile technology available and able to to the needed classroom, my students will benefit from your donations by learning about and understanding the following: *How they earn money *Gross vs. Net (taxes, SS, etc) *budgeting: fixed vs. variable expenses *Bank accounts: checking vs. savings *Credit vs. Debt (assets vs. liabilities) Through donors like you, these students will be FINANCIAL superstars!!!
