Ms. MATHEWS from Dorchester MA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books that excite and inspire them to read, explore, question, and learn more. The books on this list will appeal to a wide range of readers in our school.

Our school library is the heart of the school, both literally and figuratively. The library is located in the center of the building and is the location where school and community meetings are usually held. Due to a complete makeover five years ago, the library is also the brightest (almost tropical) and newest area of the school. As the librarian, I strive to maintain the welcoming aura that was created when we received new paint, carpeting, furniture, etc. as part of the makeover.
Our students and teachers rely on our excellent book collection to support curriculum studies and independent reading interests.
I strive to provide books that reflect the students and their wide range of interests and questions. I am proud to provide a very diverse collection that feature books about people of color and written and illustrated by authors and illustrators of color. We want our students to see no limits to their potential and to be inspired by people from history as well as contemporary stories about kids just like them who have faced challenges and found ways to be resilient in the face of adversity.
The books on our list include a lot of new titles that were published in the last two years. Children always ask for new books and are always thrilled to be handed a book that looks bright and shiny. My goal is to hand children as many books as possible with images of people who resemble themselves and people in their families and neighborhoods. I want our children to reach for their highest possible goals and to know that others before them have faced challenges and been resilient, resourceful, and successful.
I want my students to find a true love of reading by discovering a new character in a fiction story or a person from history who did amazing things.
The more options that we can have available that meet children's interests, the more likelihood that we will be able to find books to inspire our children to read more and realize how essential reading is to their success in every dimension in school and in the world outside of school.
