Getting Engaged In Engage New York: Flipped Classroom!

My students need an iPad with stylus.

My Students

Current and growing research shows that implementing a "Flipped Classroom" approach allows more time in the classroom for valuable instruction and increases student success! Please help us to experience the fullest that Engage New York has to offer. Lessons I record will be available to everyone!

I teach a group of amazing 4th grade academically gifted students who work hard every day to achieve their academic and leadership goals.

They are extremely bright, eager, and motivated individuals. I teach in a school located in southern Louisiana and in my district funds for gifted classes are limited. At this school, most teachers have a Promethean Board and other types of technology to engage students in lessons. My classroom only has three working but very slow computers and this is the extent to our technology. Every year I beg for more technology, but the money is simply not there because I teach gifted students. These are the students who can do so much with technology! I can only dream about what they can accomplish given these tools at their fingertips. Having a single iPad in my room and making it available to my students is only the beginning!! Assuming that these students have this type of technology at home is false. Gifted doesn't mean rich!

My Project

I am requesting an iPad and stylus so that I can video record lessons and post on our class website to help students who are struggling with our new math curriculum. This will also be a GREAT opportunity for my students to solve problems themselves and post their videos so that they can help others in the class and in the entire 4th grade! My vision is that during math lessons I can say "Hey Tommie! That's a great way of solving this problem! I love the strategies you used. Lets record your method and post it to the website!" Parents are even struggling with helping their children with this new and rigorous curriculum, so what a great way to provide support for them as well. I will purchase the app that will enable me to record the screen and my voice and my students as we solve problems. I know my students will love seeing and hearing themselves and their peers guiding each other through difficult math problems. Another opportunity is to just have an iPad for cool apps!!!

I love Engage New York!

I just wish I could provide something deeper for my students that will help them along the way. I have an open phone and door policy. If my students need help, they know that they can call me at home to guide them through math homework. Having lessons and examples recorded on my website will not only help them but it will also give back time with me to my family. Thank you so much for considering this project!
