Getting Digital Tools into the Hands of Digital Natives Now
My students need 5 Lenovo Yoga Chromebooks to work as 21st century scientists and engineers, explore digital modeling and coding, as well as to increase collaboration with others.
I work in an amazing arts Integrated public school in Lexington, KY. Our students audition and are accepted into our school for creative and performing arts. This makes for a very unique and wonderful teaching and learning environment. Though all our students have the commonality of being identified as talented in their focus arts areas, we have a diverse population of students with a wide range of academic interests and abilities that come from all over our city.
My students are highly motivated and hardworking children.
Because of their diverse educational backgrounds, they have all had different scientific and math experience than each other, but providing engaging and motivating hands-on experiences and online tools in the lab allows all my students the ability to teach and learn from one another and acheive success. Students get an "insider's view" of how engineers apply mathematical skills and scientific knowledge to solve problems. In my classroom, we think and wonder, wonder and think, each and every day. It is my intention to create 21st century thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
My classroom runs on Google. Both my students and I use the tools for productivity, collaboration, communication, completing assignments, and interacting with people around the world. I have moved to a new lab this year, and my new classroom does not currently have any student devices. I am seeking funding to bring Lenovo Yoga Chromebooks to my new classroom so that I can engage my new students in teaching and learning that involves 21st century tools. The materials from this project will help further engage and prepare my students for their future.
With these devices, my students will be able to learn 21st century science, engineering, math, and technology skills to appropriately, and effectively, research, collect and analyze data, collaborate, communicate, create, use digital models, robotics, coding and so much more to become part of the ever-changing digital world around them.
Modern students, who are digital natives, think and learn with and through technology. Though traditional classroom methods are still relevant, we, as educators, must strive to make the online tools, like youTube and Hangout, useful for students in learning and communicating information with a global audience. We can use Scratch to create coded game that teaches content, Google Hangout to take a virtual tour of a science lab, create collaborative slide decks, use Lego WeDo to create 3D models that with moving components..., there are so many possibilities!
By using these devices, each student will be able to bring their individuality and creativity to what they have learned. By given students authentic audiences and tools, they will able to unlock passion and learning that will prepare them for a global society of their future.
Please consider a contribution to our project. The availability of devices in a classroom is vitally important! Thank you!
