My students need paper bag puppets, an Aquadoodle, stamps and stamp pads, a Magna Doodle, Spin Art for the extended school year to enrich the summer curriculum! My students love creating crafts, foam art, spin art, and using stamps.
The students in my school come from all over Nassau County to learn in an environment that best fits their needs. The students can range in age anywhere from 8-21. I teach an ungraded middle school classroom, where I have six students who are primarily classified as having autism and are non-verbal. Although my students are ages 11-13, their functioning level is similar to that of a toddler.
Typically their deficits include communication, social interactions, obsessive interests, and repetitive behaviors.
In order to be successful, they require a highly structured learning environment. Visual schedules, token economy systems, sensory integration therapy, significant prompting, and lots of positive reinforcement are just a few things that aid them throughout the school day!
My Project
During the Extended School Year we work on academics but we also incorporate arts and crafts to work on fine motor development and creativity. When I teach I try to incorporate different art projects with each lesson to keep my students engaged and their behaviors to a minimum. My students love to use their hands to explore different materials and create art!
My students need numerous crafts to continue learning hands on and to be able to express themselves as individuals.
