I have the privilege of working with all 141 kindergarten students in our rural school district. They love to come to school and we love to give them all we can, because they give us their all! I love coming to school because of these kids!!! It's not a job, it's a part of my life.
My students are hard workers and they long for anything special I can do for them - especially if it has to do with books!
Many of the students come from homes that are struggling to keep a heated roof over their heads and enough food on their tables. My students are always genuinely excited to receive books, supplies for a word game or whatever it is I can scramble up to send with them!
My Project
The only way to get better at reading, is to READ! Now, more than ever, with our students out of school for an undetermined time, I need to find ways to keep books in my students' hands and have them continue reading at a level that's just right for them, so they don't lose all the knowledge they've worked so hard to gain! But how???
EUREKA - I've got it - I would like to supply each of our 141 kindergarten students with 3 books they can actually read, and a stuffed animal 'buddy' to read the stories to!
Reading to others is an excellent way for students to boost their self confidence and practice the strategies they've been taught. Having a special stuffed animal is the PERFECT way to pique their interest and keep their growing minds reading! These books can also lend themselves to an idea for writing a new story. Reading & writing go hand in hand, right?? Being under a "stay at home" order really inhibits the ability to go out and be exposed to new experiences. These new books can add to imaginations and real world connections they've had in the past, and be perfect segues for a new writing piece! AWESOME!!!!
The studded animal reading buddies can also be more important than we could ever imagine for a nervous 5 year old, to cuddle up to, to talk to and to form a friendship with during this incredibly difficult time with the world. A safety net, from their teacher, as a reminder that we miss them, are thinking of them and hope to see them soon.
