My Students
I work in an outstanding school with highly motivated students in Memphis, TN. We are a public school where students have to maintain high academic standards, display integrity, learn to become community and academic leaders and provide service to others.
It is a small Title I school within the Shelby County School system.
I love the enthusiasm and goal-driven nature of these students. They take opportunities to grow seriously and keep me motivated as an educator to keep finding new goals for us to pursue together.
My Project
Recent research shows that classroom flexibility is about as important as air quality, light, or temperature in boosting academic outcomes. Not all students fit in the same spaces as easily as others. This year, I have gone desk-less, which has made a world of difference in focus and engagement.
With less opportunity to expel energy via physical activity during the day, students are prone to distraction and frustration.
Providing my students with seating options that allow for movement and ease of re-configuration creates the possibility for more concentration and retention.
Language Learning, Reading and Global Competencies are vital to developing compassion and skills necessary to be clear communicators and future leaders. However, these classes require vulnerability and mental plasticity. Sitting in an uncomfortable chair that is too small only makes it harder to maintain an academic mindset.
This is more than a fad, or the new thing to do. It is a research-based solution to the greater and greater issue of student stress and fatigue.
