I teach second grade in Columbia, South Carolina. I teach at a Title I school with many diverse students. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students receive backpack food for the weekends. Despite the obstacles, my students come to school full of life and eager to learn. Our school is an Arts Magnet school, where we focus on media, performing, and visual arts. We are moving all throughout the day. At any given moment you can look around and someone is up moving around to learn, explore or just let out some energy. I have 14 energetic 2nd graders getting ready to take on the world!
My Project
My students need more comfortable seating in the classroom. We have a small couch that becomes that item to argue for each day during independent reading. I want to be able to provide more areas around the room for my students to be able to curl up with a good book. These bean bag chairs and pillows would allow more areas around the room to read.
I want to help my students to become enjoyable readers.
When we talk about places we like to read no one ever says sitting in a desk. When I think about my reading experiences I think about reading on the beach or on the couch. I want my students to have wonderful reading experiences and they need a comfortable environment to do this.
