My students need wobble stools, a jumbo beanbag seat and TheraPutty.

Our 5th graders come from a rich mixture of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The families attending our school are primarily low-income families and we are nearly 90% free lunch. Our students navigate many challenges at home, in their neighborhood, and at school on a daily basis, but this does not stop them!
Despite the adversity, these students come to school with a positive attitude for life-long learning!
They are highly resilient and arrive at school willing to learn and engage in new experiences. Their dedication and perseverance when it comes to learning is among the best! We hope to foster this love of learning by helping them collaborate, communicate, and explore through various hands-on experiences.
This year I have implemented flexible seating in my classroom to allow students choice in where they learn. As a 5th grader, they are able to find what tool helps them learn best and the wobble stools have been a popular choice in the classroom. Currently, we have two stools and I am looking to add four more to allow more opportunities for students to use the wobble stools. The students love these stools as they allow them to rock or move in one spot while staying engaged in their learning. I believe in allowing their bodies to move if they are still engaged and on-task, they are kids and they crave movement, why not give them a productive way to do it?
Along with giving my students the tools they need to learn, I also want to give them a calming space where they can regulate themselves and get back to learning.
My students navigate many challenges at home or in their neighborhood. With all of the traumatic experiences at home and in our society today, school is a calm and stable place. Having bodies on high alert and always in fight or flight mode, my 5th graders need a space in our room to calm their bodies and minds. In this calming space, students will be provided with a private area complete with a comfortable beanbag seat, breathing exercises, fidgets and Thera Putty to use in order to regulate and get back to learning as soon as possible. Providing students with these tools gives them calming strategies they will use for a lifetime!
