3rd grade is such a wonderful year, combining the innocence and love of school with a dive into deep learning and growing responsibility. I work at a small school in Northern Virginia with a large amount of economic and cultural diversity. My students come from a close knit community of approximately 2 square miles, in which students who are economically well off live next door to students who have less. Our school speaks many languages from Spanish to Urdu to Arabic and students learn and grow from each other in a strong, loving school community.
Our school is uniquely placed in the center of an affluent community, however 33% of our students receive free and reduced lunch.
These students are so excited to learn and grow, but our school lacks the additional government funding we need to provide further supplies. I ask for your help to provide my students with unique learning experiences to stretch their problem solving skills, give them comfort and fulfill their love of reading.
My Project
Ever sit in a hard plastic chair? While functional, blue plastic chairs do not inspire students to learn and focus, choice over their seating arrangement, especially during group and independent work time does.
Donations to this project you will increase student engagement and focus by allowing students to take ownership of their own learning focus and ultimately their academic achievement.
As referenced in Psychology Today, Herman Miller did a study, which in 2008 revealed that “giving people some control over their surroundings adds to their sense of well-being.”
My classroom participates in the workshop model for reading, writing and math. Students work in small groups at my table, lie on the floor, stand, sit on stools and in other configurations that make them comfortable. Students take ownership of their own learning when they are comfortable to do so.
These materials already have a home in my classroom. The storage ottomans are used for students during small group work at my kidney table, and are pulled out by students to use as backrests, tables and foot rests. My current ones have been so popular over the years, they are falling into disrepair.
The large pillows help students find a comfortable place to read with stamina and work with small groups of math students on the floor. Thank you for your support to make this a reality!
