Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If I were to describe my classroom in five words, they would be: authentic, rigorous, supportive, engaging, and community. The students in my class have ownership of their learning, and a lot of what happens, happens organically. My passion for learning is recognized by each and every one of my students. I created an environment where it is essential to take risks and establish deeper learning, having the students engage and become a community. They live by the idea that it is important to always try their best while using the 7 habits!
But, all of my students are in a low-income, high poverty area, and are faced with several challenges both in and outside the classroom.
To combat the challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful experiences. Can you help us close the achievement gap for the students who do not have the necessary materials to succeed?
My Project
Within schools, it is very important that we provide students with choice. Flexible seating will allow students choice, which allows students to take charge over their learning. Providing students with choices will also empower them! Students will be able to choose if they sit on a wobble chair to help regulate themselves. They can also choose to sit on a balance ball or flexible desk.
The items that I selected will provide students with additional seating options that will help them make more effective learning decisions.
Students will be able to move their bodies in ways that research says focuses them.
It turns out that there is quite a lot of research that spending too much time sitting is just plain unhealthy. Giving kids choices, such as standing, laying down, bouncing a bit while they are working, etc. are all healthier options for kids. There is also a lot of research that shows that children learn better while they are moving.
Help me help my students make the choice to take charge of their learning!
