Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Audubon K-8 is an urban, low-economic, and high poverty school located in the southeastern portion of San Diego. Many of the students come from single parent homes or homes where there are multiple family units living together under the same roof. There are about 450 students enrolled at our school. Our school has a large English Language Learner population. The languages spoken amoung the students are Spanish, Tagalog, Samolian, Lao, Arabic, and Russian as well as English. All students attending Audubon qualify for the Free Lunch program.
My Project
My students love to get new books, but, due to budgetary constraints, they are difficult to purchase. Many of our existing books are old, falling apart, or are so out of date that they uninteresting to my readers. We recently read "The Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis. My students were so engrossed in the novel that their level of comprehension and discussion increased tremendously. They were so curious as to what happened after the novel ended that we wanted to follow-up with the next three books in the series.
All students should have the opportunity to read books that spark their imagination, show them a world outside their own, and to motivate them to continue to read.
By providing students high interest, engaging, and relevant books as well as a more comfortable place to read, I am providing more options for my class that will enable them to get more enjoyment out of reading as well as foster habits of life long readers and learners.
