My students have mild disabilities. They mainstream into general education classes and see me for one period to get support in learning the material in their core classes. They are able to access the curriculum and excel with the use of technology.
I work with a diverse population of students that come to class every day prepared to achieve anything.
Even if they find specific subjects challenging, they come into class with a "can do" attitude.
They help each other and take every opportunity to voice their ideas and ask their questions. Not all of my students learn the same way and many students need multiple learning modalities to access the curriculum.
My Project
My students often get tired of sitting in traditional desks all day long. When they come into the Academic Support class they look forward to having flexible seating options. When talking to the students about what they wish we had in our classroom, they mentioned some book titles to start. However, the discussion quickly turned to how uncomfortable it was to sit on the hard, cold floor or in a traditional desk. But imagine how inviting it would be to have a large, comfortable chair to curl up on while enjoying a book! My students don't want to spend more time sitting at their desks; they enjoy the freedom my classroom provides to choose a comfortable working spot all around the room.
We are working on building up our new reading nook and would love to have some large, comfortable chairs to sit in while we read.
We would use the desk bands in our class and a few other classrooms on campus to help students fidget quietly. Giving students a band to help them get some wiggles out, allows the student to focus on the work they need to complete while moving quietly in their desk.
