My Students
I teach in an alternative middle school that serves ethnically diverse, high risk youth. We are a small Community Day School of 17 students with either learning or social challenges. Our middle school helps students gain a new perspective on the way that they act and learn through activities like one on one lessons, community service, and immediate consequences for actions. Our school places a heavy emphasis on peace circles, restorative justice, and social emotional learning. Many students' test scores indicate they are below grade level in reading, but they diligently work to improve their reading skills!
Reading is a vital life skill and I want to have an area to help motivate my students to improve their reading skills.
Most of my students don't read at home. I want to create an area in the classroom where they can practice and enjoy reading!
My Project
All of my students participate in independent and shared reading in class. Currently, students read at their desks or sit on the floor. Most of my students have struggled with reading, but since reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as a school, my students have grown to love reading! My students were not successful in traditional schools for a variety of reasons. Book boats will help students to respect one another's personal space, while providing them a comfortable and fun area to enjoy a good book. Book boats are storage bins that students will personalize and sit in while reading. They look forward to creating an independent reading space that is truly their own.
By donating to our project you will ultimately help to increase student literacy.
Students will be able to simply focus on their books without distractions. Being competent readers is an important life skill. Book boats will help my students continue to expand on their love for reading by providing them a unique and comfortable reading environment where they can get lost in a good book.
