I teach an amazing group of high energy four-year-olds each year. They love hands-on learning and discussing new ideas with their new friends at school. They also enjoy exploratory learning and discovering the world around them through play. Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged, farming town with a growing population of migrant workers. Our poverty level continues to rise with our free and reduced lunch rate reaching 100% of our population. It's no secret that not every student has a warm, loving environment to go home to, some don't even have a bed to sleep on.
Each year I strive for our classroom to be a fun place where every student feels safe, loved, and most importantly, comfortable learning in a way that makes them confident through both victories and mistakes.
After all the learning we do through play, music, and movement, students need a comfortable place to rest. This is the first time many of these four-year old kids have ever been to school.
Adequate rest is essential to a child's ability to learn, and our nap mats and sheets have been used for many years and are very worn.
I started this project so all of my students will have the opportunity to rest in a comfortable place and prepare for the remainder of our day. These nap mats(I already have funding for sheets) will provide a place for each child to rest in a safe environment every day.
