This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with the most inspiring students! They are middle school special education students from a high poverty area within Philadelphia. Despite all of the challenges they face, they are eager to learn and always put forth their best effort. As a teacher, I am so fortunate to have such amazing students in my life!

Students in my classroom have been identified as needing special education services and attend a title 1 school, but they don't let that define them.

My Project

My students are reading at least 2 grades below level and have little exposure to literature outside of the classroom. Many of them enjoy reading, but struggle with what is offered in our middle school. All children deserve the right to books and the joy that comes with diving into a new novel. My project will provide students will an assortment of books to chose from that are on their reading level, but also of middle school and teenager interest. Specifically many students have requested graphic novels, about half of the list of books for this project is made up of graphic novels. Graphic novels are compelling to students and the use of pictures helps guide reading comprehension. Additionally, my students lack a place to read their books comfortably. Providing students with bean bag chairs, wobble seats for desk chairs, and a rug will let them relax while they read and help eliminate distractions. Lastly, a bookshelf will be used to store the books and keep the safe. Students will be assigned as librarians to organize the books and make sure they are all on the shelf. This will help them learn the Dewey Decimal system and help them practice their ordering skills in a fun way.

Student who are exposed to more text and read frequently are more confident in the classroom.

I want all of my students to know that they are capable of anything and that they ARE bright young scholars. This project will help us gain confidence and be great readers!
