My students need some flexible seating arrangements to make our classroom feel like home. Your donation goes toward two bean bags for comfortable floor seating in front, and two "wobble chairs" for movers and fidgeters!
My students are residents of the amazingly diverse South Sacramento community. Many of my students (or "honey bunnies," as I call them) speak a language other than English at home. Also, our school has the privilege of welcoming approximately 2 dozen Afghan students each year as they move to the United States. This diversity is, without a doubt, the most beautiful thing about our school community. Students take pride in showing and sharing their unique home cultures during Heritage Day...and every day! They learn from each other and appreciate each other.
Approximately 90% of our school qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
Similarly, our students attend schools during their K12 education that are under-funded and frequently suffer from instability in staffing (even at the administrative level). The poverty that my students face come with a myriad of traumatic factors and experiences. Their resilience is bitter-sweet because, while I admire it, I wish they could "just be kids." Many have responsibilities outside of school to help their families, whether that be chores around the house, cooking for the family, or babysitting siblings/family members.
My Project
These flexible seating options will make my students more comfortable in our classroom as we push and challenge ourselves with math. We are requesting bean bags and wobble chairs. Students will be able to sit in a way that is least restrictive and most comfortable to them, allowing them to collaborate with one another during the learning process. Many students bring a lot of anxiety with them to the math classroom, and comfortable, age-appropriate seating will help them collaborate! Flexible seating makes our room feel like home, and helps break the rigidity of the "normal" math class. No more rows and columns for us! Also, my students, quite frankly, don't have much, so I want them to feel special when they come into our classroom!
