Our STEM, Title 1 school serves a diverse community of K-5 students in Beaverton, Oregon. Nearly 65% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and 15% experience homelessness at some point during the school year. However, our students persevere through these hardships.
As a STEM School, our students are focusing on embedding math in areas of Science, Technology, and Engineering.
I am fortunate enough to work with small groups of students to support them in becoming confident problem solvers. Discussing strategies to help math make sense.
My Project
My students would benefit by using wobble stools in our small math groups. The wobble stools will keep their legs active for better blood flow, which will lead to more engagement.
My kinesthetic learners will benefit from the wobble stools.
The stools will allow students to use their muscles along with their brain. I'm confident that the therapeutic wobble chair will increase productivity and stamina in math.
The magnetic manipulatives will help with their understanding of math concepts through the understanding of the math models. Many times students are working in math groups and I am having them show and explain their thinking. These manipulatives will allow students a deeper and better understanding. These manipulatives wouldn't just be for teaching, but also for kids to manipulate to create models and help justify their thinking. This would both increase interest and enjoyment of mathematics.
