Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a sixth year teacher working on my first year trying flexible seating. I teach at a low-income/Title I school district, and my students face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. This year we were struck by Hurricane Harvey and our school was really not damaged, but the homes of many of my students were.
Despite the hardships they have faced, they are resilient and spirited learners making their way back.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able personally to solve the many challenges they face outside of school. However, I can certainly make a powerful impact on the eight hours they spend here at school every day.
My Project
This has been my first year implementing flexible seating in my classroom and so far it has been a great success. For our first project, we got a little bit of everything just to try it out. We were able to get additional items from Goodwill but these options have been the most requested items that the students like. When students are comfortable they are more successful in class. We have really loved this so far this year and only wish we had more.
I would like to get a new set of each option so that more of my students can sit at their first choice of seating.
We will use the floor rockers and yoga balls to provide personal choice and a comfortable learning environment in the classroom and we will use the clipboard and lap trays to ensure students can really work no matter where they choose to sit.
