When you walk into my classroom, the first thing you would notice is how much talking is going on. But unlike most teachers, I encourage this behavior because upon closer inspection, the conversation is full of mathematical language and educated conjectures based on patterns they're discovering.
I teach at one of the top 5 schools in California, which also happens to be located in one of the lowest socio-economic cities in California.
This is an arts school, so my students are incredibly passionate about their respective arts conservatory. My students are some of the most creative and talented people I have ever met. They attend school from 8:00am until 5:00pm everyday with academics going until 2:10pm then going straight to their conservatory practice after that. When preparing for an upcoming event, students may be at school until 11pm. These are some of the hardest working students and they deserve a chance to have the full experience of what their textbook can provide.
My Project
My goal is to get my classroom to be 1:1 with the Acer Chromebook technology so that my students can have the privilege of fully experiencing everything their textbook has to offer. We use a curriculum that comes with an online textbook that offers a wide variety of tools that allow students to fully visualize and understand mathematics. For example, many of the lessons are accompanied by Desmos, which is an online graphing tool that makes functions come to life.
Another great example is how the curriculum makes probability fun for the students is by creating games for them to play to understand how probability works in real life situations. This will also be able to help them when they go home to study because these tools will also be available for them to use at home, but they're only useful if they have had practice using them in the classroom and understand how they work.
I truly believe having 1:1 technology will improve my classroom because my students will have the best math experience possible with the add-ons included with our online textbook.
It will change my students' lives for the better because it will make math exciting and easily understandable for them, which is a big task since it's usually their least favorite academic subject.
