I am a fourth grade math and science teacher. I teach 3 classes of math and science in a low socioeconomic school each day and my students need new calculators. In a world where technology is advancing each day, the students need to be familiar with this technology and how it can benefit them in the world. The calculators that we have in our school are simple solar powered calculators that can add, subtract, multiply, and divide. As we look at other schools around us, the students are able to use calculators with many more functions than these simple ones. The calculators that I want for our classroom are Texas Instrument Math Explorers. With these calculators, the students cannot only add, subtract, multiply, and divide but also do fractions, mixed numbers, and exponents just to name a few. Each year, we teach students how to do these complex 4th grade math concepts with fractions and mixed numbers. To have the aid of this calculator would benefit them greatly in understanding and working with these concepts. Also, with the teacher kit I will receive an overhead calculator so that the students can visually see how to work with their calculators. With these calculators, we can keep up with our technologically advanced world and learn how to operate within it. We can also check the calculators out to students as we do textbooks so that they can work with them and practice using them at home. Wow! We haven't had the resources to do this before! To do this, we will need approximately 50 calculators for the three fourth grade classes that I teach. Please help us to learn our math with more technology!
