My classroom consists of 3-,4-, and 5-year-old pre-kindergarten children who come to school five days a week. Each of the children have different emotions through out the day. Sometimes we are happy, and sometimes we are scared and frightened. It is very hard for the children to control their emotions. On a daily basis the children can go through ten different emotions at least.
My classroom has children who need an extra boost of encouragement and help controlling plus labeling their emotions.
We work on school readiness goals. This means that children are ready for school, families are ready to support their children's learning, and schools are ready for children. The majority of the children in my classroom come from low-income homes, and this is their first exposure in a school setting. They are an eager bunch of children who strive to learn more everyday and explore the world around them.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my classroom because my students display a lot of emotions and feelings during the course of a day. Sometimes they know how to calm them own selves down and other times they don't. The cozy shade I have picked out for my project will help reduce the BRIGHT lights we have in our classroom with just one switch on and help children feel like the weight of the world is not on them. The children will be able to go to our calming area in my classroom and choose a variety of materials to use. I plan to have the children go to the calming area and use the fidget materials to help calm themselves. I also plan to use the weighted items to help my children move and squirm less be able to focus at circle time.
I have spent the last two years trying to help my students calm down and talk about how they are feeling.
But unfortunately the children don't know why they are feeling the way they are or how to calm themselves with out the assistance of an adult. This project is very near and dear to me. My students come from their own families to join my classroom where we are one BIG SCHOOL FAMILY.
I want my students to be successful, intelligent, and inspiring learners when they leave my classroom. The only way this could happen is if I have a cozy and calm area for the children to express their feelings without being embarrassed or frustrated.
