Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a 4th grade public school teacher trying to reinforce science learning as well as the love of nature in my 28 students.
Our school is located in the Crocker Amazon neighborhood (near the Cow Palace) in San Francisco. Most students are learning English as a Second Language with Chinese, Spanish, Talagog, or Amoan being spoken in the home. My students and their families are very hard workers. Many of my students' parents hold two and three jobs.
I once had a 4th grade student tell me they'd never been on a hike.
We all know that "doing" and "seeing" science is a better way to hook in youngsters to that world of exploring than reading about it. When I take kids on field trips, they finally get what adaptations are. They see predators in action when viewing herons landing on their nests protecting their young from eagles. They touch igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock in their homees instead of a classroom box. They get it.
I also like to bring things into the classroom when we're unable to get a bus to take us outside of the classroom. I'm requesting a live insect presentation for our room from the Insect Discovery Lab, which is a program of the Center for Ecosystem Survival. Kids will explore the fascinating lives of beetles, millipedes, tarantulas, walking sticks, scorpions and more. This presentation will immerse my students in the world of insects and arthropods and teach their role in the food web (a California Science Standard).
This would be a fantastic and life-long memory for the students and a launching pad for continued quests.
Thanks for reading and considering our proposal.
