The love of reading is developed in the Primary Grades. It is my belief that students must have access to good books at their reading level, that appeal to their interests and that they can identify with. In the second grade students should have a wide variety of meaningful literature in their environment to "get into their hands". The literacy instruction in my classroom is based on the Guided Reading model by Fountas and Pinnell (1996}. In this model several components depend on a class having appropriate books at each student's independent and instructional reading level. One component students benefit from and love is the use of "Big Books". Students can read big books as a whole group, in small groups and sometimes individually. This allows students to practice fluency and have texts that show words large enough to use in whole group instruction. It allows practice which leads to building their confidence in reading. Another component students benefit from is having sets of guided reading books leveled according to their reading ability. This allows for individualizing instruction in order to meet the needs of the students. There is nothing better than giving students the benefit of small group reading practice at their own reading levels. Guided reading is a powerful reading tool that I hope to enhance in my second grade classroom of 18 students in an urban community; as well as sharing these resources with the other 37 second graders in our school. Having big books and sets of guided reading books at various reading levels will give me the resources needed to get books into the hands of children. There is nothing like giving a child the power of reading. They discover a new world through reading and it takes them to places they have not yet been, but may try to get there because they read about it!
