Limited resources aside, my students come to school bright and eager to engage in learning. Whether they are learning English as a second language, helping out their families, or just being kids, they are glad to be at school each and every day.
Many of our students may not show their strengths in test scores or grades, but their strengths of compassion, community, and family are obvious every day.
Older students frequently use school materials when reading to younger siblings at home and are seen helping out on the bus and playground. They can be downright inspiring.
My Project
Students need to see themselves, learn about themselves, and be themselves in the school library. If a Black child enters a library and sees only white faces and light hair looking at them from the pages of the books on display, they surely will not feel like they belong in this place. If, when they seek out information for African-American history month, they find only a few dully colored, print-oriented books on Martin Luther King and Ruby Bridges, their learning is limited. If all the historical fiction they have access to focuses on the negative concepts of Black in America's past, they do not see the full story.
All my students need to see the vibrant imagery, rich storytelling, and full history of Black culture through the books they are able to access and take home from the school library.
Exposure for all students to diversity is a strong tool for social justice. What better place to start this exposure than in the school library, a cultural space for all.
