This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach a self-contained classroom serving students with various intellectual disabilities. My students are some of the sweetest, hardest working children you will ever meet. Despite many obstacles, they show up excited and eager to learn each day. They're ready to give their best, and I meet them head-on with challenges to help them grow and develop into exceptional students, friends and leaders. This is my second year teaching in a self-contained classroom, and it is hands down the most fun and rewarding experience I’ve ever had in the classroom.

My students need materials that meet their wide range of developmental abilities.

Our school is a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. An entire wing of our school is dedicated to Pre-K through fifth-grade children with various special needs. I have the joy of teaching our Pre-K to 1st grade students with intellectual disabilities. These present themselves in many ways. I am so appreciative of the many generous DonorsChoose supporters who help me bring exciting, adaptive, and engaging materials into my classroom for my children. I am excited to return to school and see their smiling faces once the Covid-19 pandemic has subsided.

My Project

As much as I have tried to provide a structured virtual learning environment and support for my students, nothing compares to daily face-to-face reinforcement of skills and academics in the safety and structured routine of our classroom.

When we return to school, my students will have spent weeks, possibly even months, away from my classroom, our schedule and routine.

Covid-19 has had a huge impact on my students. It has affected them socially, emotionally and academically. When they return to my classroom, I want to be able to provide the highest level of consistency and comfort to help them transition back into our routine. To do this, I will use the chart paper to create new visuals and reminders. I have requested books that will be both encouraging and comforting, while helping me teach important literacy skills. I have chosen activities such as Letter Link Crabs, Alphabet Robot Action Figures, and Snap-n-Learn ABC Elephants to provide hands-on academic interactions through play. Brightly colored workbook pages filled with fun and challenging activities will re-introduce my students to our work routine without overwhelming them. The Mother Goose and Owl stuffed story tellers will be perfect for a snuggle and story during independent reading time. The popcorn and cheez-its are snack time favorites! I also selected Mini Books and Little Readers that I will be able to send home with my students for practice with their families each week.

I know my families are cherishing this extra time with their children and doing their best to help them learn and grow during their time away from school. My hope is that with these resources, I can continue to encourage my students growth and their parents participation moving forward!
