My Students

“I can do this!” These were the words a struggling first-grade student shouted as she completed a math challenge. Observing the excitement and joy when a child has confidence in their abilities is exciting for a teacher. Our school is in Montana. Our Title I school provides breakfast and lunch for 100 percent of the students. Providing meals means less stress for the student, and they come to class ready and eager to learn.

I keep our days filled with hands-on, challenging, active, learning opportunities.

The schedule is predictable because many students' home lives are filled with unpredictability.

I believe all students can learn, and each is unique in their abilities. I take that into consideration as some students stand and work while others lay on the floor. My students are taught that each student gets what they need (from me) to be successful; they don’t all get the same thing. Children in the first grade understand this and look forward to having their needs met on an individual basis. My classroom is a comfortable, safe, and enriching environment that allows my students to feel confident to take risks and make mistakes.

My Project

“The Power of Yet” comes alive during art. Drawing, painting, and creating can be frustrating for first graders. That’s where the “Power of Yet” comes in. For example, as you walk through my class while students are trying to draw a specific item you may hear, “I can’t do this, it too hard.” As you continue to listen you will hear, “Sara, you can’t do it yet but keep trying.” This is the power of yet! My students know that even if they can’t do something right now, they will soon be able to because their brains are learning and getting stronger with each attempt.

Creating, getting messy, and “The Power of Yet” allows my first graders to have fun, learn, and support each other.

My project is for basic supplies needed to create, paint, and draw. Painting and using glitter is a favorite of my young students. Watercolor paper can be used for many projects and techniques. I would like to provide my students with these basic supplies to be able to experience the magic of art and creativity on a daily basis in my classroom.
