Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Exercise has been proven to improve mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. In our Title One school full of diverse learners, this is especially important. Students come to class every day wanting to move their bodies and learn new things.
As an elementary physical education teacher, movement and discovery are a dream come true; however, it becomes a nightmare when trying to fund for equipment to continue to expand students' curiosity about different ways to stay healthy and active.
With the high cost of equipment, it becomes difficult with a small budget to replace needed material seen by every child in the year, and corners are cut to only provide the everyday essentials.
My Project
The use of pedometers and new technology in our classroom will allow students to set goals, record data, understand the importance of movement in the body and help students better understand the level that they are working at in a 40 minute class period. With this tool students will have the stepping blocks to understanding how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Our school would be fortunate to get new pedometers and they would get plenty of use each and every day by a variety of students throughout our building.
This type of documentation would also allow for concrete documentation of effort exceeded by a student in each class period.
