Getting a Headsprout on Reading

My students need access to the Headsprout reading program. I began the program last year and my students made huge gains! Looking forward to the new class doing the same.

My Students

My classroom is not your typical classroom. I have students raining from pre-K to 2nd grade. My lessons are taught in small groups and each group is a different lesson. The biggest challenge is keeping the attention of one group while others are also working in small groups around them.

My students are rockstars.

They range in abilities from non-readers to readers. They come from homes of two parents, to one parent, to multi-family homes. They have daily challenges in social, academic, and functional skills, but work hard every day to do their best. They get to join their general educational peers for lunch and recess, specials, and science and social studies. Our school is a medium sized district that has very limited funds. There is no classroom budget and each material in my classroom has been purchased by me. In order to be the best teacher I can be, I need more materials that I can personally provide. Differentiated instruction is a major need in the special education area and hands on materials are a must have.

My Project

The Headsprout Reading Program is an amazing tool to help my students get excited about phonics and reading. It is very kid friendly and my students feel they are truly playing a game rather than learning. However, even after the first 5 lessons, the students read a story and I love the look on their faces when they realize they can read! This program not only helps students begin to read, but it boosts their self-esteem to realize they CAN read.

My project will make a difference when my students light up because they are able to read.

Learning letters and sounds and putting it all together is hard enough, but when it's done with a fun and enjoyable method, it makes it that much easier and makes the students want to read.
