My students need I their own drum set up using the least amount of materials. The students will have a #10 Aluminum Can, a small plastic square, and a tambourine to play without having to share.
As the music teacher at our school, it is my privilege to get to know and teach over 500 unique children. To define them all in a couple of sentences would be complex. Our students receive a wonderful education that is only enhanced by the special topics classes offered at our school; Physical Education, Language Arts (Language and Test Taking Skills delivered through the medium of art), Media, and Music.
Kids at our school thrive in music class.
It is their chance during the school day to play and create in a different way. The data from the Illinois Report Card shows that 65.7% of students in our school are in low-income households. Naturally, this puts the music program at a disadvantage because of the cost of a quality and diverse Music Education isn't cheap.
It is my goal to enhance my student's Music Education in hopes that they then choose to become lifelong music learners.
My Project
Kids love percussion instruments and the lessons I am ready to provide take Music Class to a whole new level as every child in Music Class gets to play along for the entire play time rather than having to share instruments. Students will each get to use their own pair of drum sticks to play a duct tape decorated #10 Aluminum Can (Recycled from our very own Cafeteria), a small plastic surface, and a tambourine to get three distinct sounds. This is truly like giving each child the opportunity to play their own drum set.
These instruments will allow our students to practice State Standards that focus on musical form, steady beat, and rhythmic subdivision.
With practice our students will become musically fluent. Additionally, research has shown that teaching students to read music notation can really amp up their fluency skills in language arts classes and positively influence division and fraction skills in mathematics classes.
